Sony 12-24mm f/4 G – Announcement

Introduction

Sony just announced the 12-24mm f/4 G lens.  Not a G Master, just the standard G.

I’m actually pretty keen on this lens as I do real-estate photography and the idea of shooting my Sony A7S would be great with this lens. Not because I need low-light, but because the A7S is only 12mp which is much more manageable for churning out loads of images for web use.

Currently I use the Nikon D610 and Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens.

This combination has served me well for years and the Sigma is sufficiently sharp. However, this new Sony lens is touted to be very sharp and is a little lighter than the competition.

If mounted to a Sony Mirrorless body, it will definitely be a lighter combo!

Features

  • G Lens ultra wide-angle zoom lens

  • Linear motor for agile, highly precise focus lens control

  • Direct Drive SSM for quiet, highly precise focus lens control

  • Sony Nano AR Coating to eliminate flare and ghosting

  • Dust and moisture resistant design

  • Weighing only 565g

Conclusion

Personally I’m happy with this announcement as I love wide angle photography. Some say 12mm is ‘too wide’ for any sort of work, especially real-estate. I’m the type of person that says you can’t go wide enough! The extra width is great for a variety of reasons and there is a fine art to shooting with wide angle lenses.

I’ll be keeping my eye out on this lens for sure!

Most likely I’ll be selling my 16-35mm for this! Any buyers, get in touch 😉
